Course Syllabus: Climate Change


Course Description

Become a Climate Champion!

Climate Change, Global Warming and the Greenhouse effect are the biggest issues we face in the world today. This course considers the rate of climate change, and what we must do to adapt our philosophies, economics, and lifestyle to reduce carbon emissions. At the end of the day it is about taking responsibility and looking after the Earth which sustains our very lives.

Course Requirements

Some high school education would be benefical in order to understand the concepts and information presented. However, If you do not have high schooling, you are still encouraged to take the course as the Instructor will provide additional assistance as required.

Course Lessons

1. Earth's Long History - In this lesson we will discuss the immense history of the Earth and the natural cycles of changing climate.

2. Climate and Weather - This lesson will cover basic information about the differences between climate and weather, and why our civilisation is climate dependent.
 
3. Greenhouse Gases - The lesson looks at the evidence and origin of increasing anthropogenic greenhouse gases.

4. The Greenhouse Effect - In this lesson you will learn about the runaway greenhouse effect and the role of the carbon cycle 
.
5. Physical Impacts of Climate Change  - We will look at the range of physical impacts, including; sea level rise, increasing average global temperature, droughts, wildfires and other extreme weather events.
 
6. Social Impacts of Climate Change  - This lesson covers questions like; What happens to people when sea levels rise? Which countries will suffer drought, wildfires, and greater spread of  diseases, and what will happen to agriculture.

7. Mitigation and Adaptation -  We will discuss what should be done now to reduce the impacts of climate change, and how we can personally make a difference.  

Course Materials

 There are no prescribed textbooks for this course. All readings and videos are contained in lessons, uploaded documents and associated net links.

Grading Policy

This course is designed so that it can be studied wholly online, using resources provided.

 

Coursework Consists of:

7 lessons
7 exams related to each lesson
7 short questions (assignments)
Class polls, and participation .
 
Total Assessment = 300 points
Exams 140 points
Assignments 140 points
Class participation and polls 20 points

 

Grading (%):

85 – 100 High Distinction

75 – 84 Distinction

65 – 74 Credit

50 – 64 Pass
50 or less Fail

Certificate Policy

1. A Certificate of Participation
Awarded to students completing all coursework, and posting three thought provoking forum postings.
 
2. A Certificate of Merit
Awarded to students completing all coursework, posting three thought provoking forum postings, and displaying a keen interest in the course.
 
3. A Certificate of Outstanding Achievement
Awarded to students who display a keen interest in the course, achieve grades of 85% and above, complete of all coursework, and provide five thought provoking forum postings.
